A few years ago we evaluated our position on having a FaceBook account for our league and concluded it wasn't the right thing to do at the time.
Three years have passed and FaceBook has evolved, addressing many of the concerns we once had:
- Features have been put in place that allow us to control/restrict communication with members of the appropriate age as laid out by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
- At the time of our evaluation, FaceBook was vulnerable to session hijacking (your account was easy to steal) simply because FaceBook wasn't using a secure connection. A secure connection (SSL) is now mandatory, amongst a myriad of other security options that allow us to make our page as public or private as we wish.
- Communication can now be monitored much more closely allowing multiple administrators to moderate replies, thus [hopefully] preventing any conversation from getting out of hand (lets hope that never happens anyway).
So our FaceBook page is restricted to users age 13+. Bear in mind that our FaceBook page DOES NOT replace our website. Game cancellations will still be sent from the website first, which automatically pushes out notifications via e-mail and text. Cancellations will be announced on FaceBook shortly afterward (although this too may be automated in the future). Clearly, the intention is to use FaceBook as another tool to further communicate with the families of our league's players. A FaceBook link/icon will be added to the website in the near future.
